Ganguly And Controversy

The Indian Cricket scene just hasn’t been able to rid itself of controversy for the past year. To be more precise, since the Ganguly-Chappell spat. While the most-talked about personal battle in India’s most popular game seems to have died down for now, another one has come to the fore- one that’s surprised many. Yes, now it’s Ganguly v Dalmiya.

I know as much as the general public does about the issue; that Ganguly accuses Dalmiya of having leaked the Chappel e-mail to the public, which caused such a hullabaloo.

With the former Indian captain having suddenly taken such a strong opposing stance against someone who was once amongst the most powerful men in cricket, I seriously wonder what’s going on.

Jagmohan Dalmiya has supported Ganguly on several occasions, including the Chappell spat. Then, you wonder, why has Ganguly spoken out against him on the same issue, claiming it was Dalmiya’s fault the whole issue went public? That’s not known yet, but Sourav’s motives behind his most recent actions are certainly questions and definitely not honourable. There is absolutely no reason for him to get involved in cricket elections, especially when he claims to be still trying for a place in the Indian cricket team.

It’s been some time since Ganguly’s name was last heard in the Indian team. And with the BCCI now coming out with innumerable allegations against Jagmohan Dalmiya, almost humiliating the very man who made the Indian cricket board the richest in the world, I almost wonder whether Ganguly too has given up on standing beside Dalmiya. I have nothing against Sourav; in fact I was all for him during the Ganguly-Chappell spat. I was amongst the many cricket fans who felt India’s most successful cricket captain had been hard done by.

However, going by what the media has come out with, what Sourav Ganguly is doing is something I did not expect of him at all. I simply wonder whether this is a way of trying to get back into the national team, by supporting the candidate for the CAB elections who will probably replace Dalmiya – going with the force. Dalmiya, to his credit, hasn’t said much about the issue – but what he has stated conveys a lot. ‘I am not here to say or do anything more now. People change, and I am not the BCCI president anymore. So obviously loyalties change.’
